Georgia Destination Named Best For Memorial Day Getaways
Believe it or not, we’ve reached the month that contains the gateway to summer. As such, Southern Living has detailed the best places to go this Memorial Day weekend, and two Georgia destinations were suggested.
“Whether you want to enjoy a relaxing couple of days on a sunny beach, eat and shop your way through a bustling city, or seek cooler weather in the mountains, the South is full of wonderful places to spend Memorial Day weekend,” they say.
For many people Memorial Day weekend is the first three-day weekend in a few months. It’s a transitional period where we turn the page on the winter or spring, and look forward to what lies ahead in summer. School gets out, camps kick in, and you start to envision a lot of beach time with friends and family.
In Georgia, we are obviously fortunate given the nice weather, an exciting city like Atlanta, nature, and the coastline. However, that doesn’t mean you don’t have to venture out because one of these is right outside your door. In fact, the locations Southern Living points out may even be less crowded this time of year if snowbirds packed up and moved up north.
Four hours across route I-16 will bring you to both of these spots. Maybe you can hit one per day? We’ll start inland with Columbus, which ranked 11th on Southern Living‘s list. They highlight your ability to walk around the area and take in the sites. From the museums to the riverwalks, there is some great history to Columbus. There’s also a food type for every preference.
Now, driving east, let’s pull into Savannah, which ranked 7th. “Let this Southern Georgia town charm you with more than just its iconic Spanish moss-covered live oaks and well-traveled cobblestone thoroughfare known as River Street,” Southern Living states. There’s even a 90-minute walking tour in Savannah that is highly educational, informative, and fun.
Tybee Island is about 18 miles from Savannah if beach life is more of your Memorial Day speed. “Often referred to simply as “Savannah’s Beach,” Tybee Island offers 5 miles of white sand and glimmering blue water,” Choice Hotels explains. With a pier, pavilion, and dozens of local cuisine restaurants, Tybee Island makes it easy to unplug and unwind.
If you are thinking about heading to Atlanta for Memorial Day weekend, the first-place Braves will be playing in Pittsburgh from Friday through Sunday but returning home for a Monday afternoon game vs. the Washington Nationals on Monday (May 27).
