Right or Wrong? Jimmy John’s Employee Throws Out Sandwich After Refusing Cash

There’s a new debate taking over the internet. Now, whether it’s right or wrong depends on your view and interpretation of the rules. A Jimmy John’s employee is going viral for throwing out a customer’s sandwich after refusing to accept cash.
The register was down, so the business was not accepting cash that day. However, that’s all this customer had on him when he realized he didn’t have his card with him. That’s where the story begins.
Jimmy John’s Employee Throws Out Sandwich After Refusing Cash
According to Dexerto, the employee warned the customer that the were unable to accept cash that day due to an issue with the register. Then, they made the sandwich only for the man to make it clear that all he had with him was cash. So, the employee refused to give the customer their sandwich. Rules are rules, right?
Well, the customer doesn’t seem to think so. He demanded that the employee give him the sub for free since it’s already made and that’s a better option than it going into the trash. However, the customer wasn’t willing to take any risks. In a video captured by the customer (we’ll get to that later), you can see the employee say, “I’m not gonna risk my job for you. Because you can’t pay…I’m not going to do anything for you, I can’t accept cash today. I’m not going to give you a free sandwich and risk my job for you.”
I’ve found myself in some similiar situations before. One time, after getting a hair cut I learned I couldn’t use card. Unfortunately, I didn’t know that until after the barber was done. Thankfully, they allowed me to run to a nearby bank and return to pay. They didn’t have to do that. I was glad they did, however.
It’s unfortunate! Obviously, anyone would love a free sub. However, is he entitled to one? If he was warned you can’t pay with cash then he should have known he was going to need his card. The employees can’t be expected to give product away for free. Sure, if the employee was flush with cash he could havea put it on his own card. However, he wasn’t willing to do that and I can’t blame him. Especially after seeing how the customer reacted.

Trusting a stranger to do anything can be a tough ask. I won’t let a stranger watch my dog. That’s something I know I need to trust you with before asking you to do. Actually, I won’t even ask many of my friends to do a task like that. Additionally, asking a stranger to house sit can be a dangerous ask. Now, I’m supposed to trust them with my food? In their own vehicle? That’s tough.
A lot can go wrong with a stranger picking up your food and handling it. First, they could obviously eat your food. A 10 piece nugget can very quickly turn into a 9 piece. Maybe they won’t take a full nugget. They could just steal one fry. Hey, you’ll never notice. They could also take a sip of your beverage.
However, consuming your food isn’t the only bad thing they can do. They can spit on it. They can put their hands in it. There are no shortage of the weird things they could do to it. Sure, companies have started taking measures to prevent stuff like this happening. They’ll staple or tape your bag shut. There’s no a protective film over beverage cups. However, it doesn’t seem to be enough. Drivers are still out there doing stuff–and getting caught doing it.

Cort Freeman was born and raised in Metro Detroit. He was named Clarkston High School 2009 Class Clown 13 years after graduating. Totally normal thing to happen. That’s thanks to his time spent as an Intern at Comedy Central and Social Media Correspondent for The Colbert Report. Cort has done comedy across the country, both standing up and sitting down. When he’s not trying to make you laugh on-air and online, he’s probably at home enjoying his favorite shows like Seinfeld, South Park, and The Office. He’s also totally uncomfortable writing about himself in the third person. Cort enjoys writing about comedy, food, sports, and entertainment. So, basically anything and everything.
