Fat Joe Reveals How He Got ‘Joey Crack’ Nickname
Fat Joe’s infamous nickname has a funny origin story. For years, fans and his rap peers have called him “Joey Crack” off of the assumption that he coined the nickname off the alleged drug-related start to his rap career. However, after years of speculation, Fat Joe revealed how he got his nickname.
The New York rapper, born Joseph Antonio Cartagena, wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter) how he got the name years ago.
“They call me Joey Crack ’cause the crack of my a– shows whenever I stand up, girls in my hood gave me the name,” Fat Joe tweeted.
Fans Respond To Fat Joe’s Nickname Origin Story
One fan is not buying Joe’s origin story. “[laughing crying emoji] nah is them atlanta RICO laws coming to New York or something?” one fan asked referring to Young Thug’s RICO trial.
“Finally an answer to one of the most asked questions in rap history,” a hip-hop song enthusiast account tweeted.
One fan responded by telling Joe he could have just kept this to himself. “Batman couldn’t have got this info out of me. on god you should have keep that one to yourself gang [laughing crying emoji],” they wrote.
“This is wholesome content right here. A visual I didn’t need, but points for connecting the dots for the people,” another fan responded back to the rapper.
He spoke about the nickname in relation to his childhood last year on A&E’s Origins of Hip Hop series. The “Lean Back” rapper recalled being bullied in school and that kids would jump him. He added that one of his best friends eventually turned on him and aided the bullies in beating him up.
“They were like, ‘Well if you don’t jump him with us, we’re gonna beat you up every day too—and my friend Leonard jumped me with them,” Joe said. “I went home and I cried for so many hours. I had a black hoodie on, black jeans and black Timberland chukkas. I’m tying my chukkas over and over again and I was like, ‘I don’t give a fuck I swear to God, giving it to everybody. That was the birth of Joey Crack.”
