Massachusetts Ranks As One Of The Best States For Ice Skating
Winter’s here, so it’s time to get your cold weathere gear out of storage. In New England, for those who don’t play hockey all year, this specifically means ice skates. LawnStarter published a list detailing the best cities for ice skating in America and two Massachusetts areas were named in the top 25.
“We looked for cities with plenty of access to ice rinks, skating lessons, and hockey equipment,” LawnStarter said when explaining how they compiled their list of cities. They also analyzed Google search trends, considered weather conditions, and the popularity of the local hockey teams.
It will come as no surprise that Massachusetts produced favorable results. In fact, so did much of New England. Providence, Rhode Island, and Bridgeport, Connecticut were also named.
Boston Ranked #3
Listed only behind New York, NY (#2) and St. Paul, MN, Boston is the second best city for rink access, and the third best for rink popularity. The fandom of hockey teams certainly factored in. The Bruins have been a very successful franchise. It certainly helps that they play their home games right in the middle of the city.
LawnStarter’s report further detailed statistics in categories such as most ice rinks, skating programs available, and average number of very cold days. Boston had the second most ice rinks among the major cities. Of course you can’t mention ice skating in Boston without making a stop at the infamous Frog Pond.
Worcester Ranked #24
The second biggest city in Massachusetts is also the second city in the state to be recognized for great ice skating opportunities. Worcester was just barely edged out by Cincinnati. However, it was also recognized for having excellent rink access.
Honorable mention here would include Springfield. The home of the NBA Hall of Fame in western Massachusetts, also made an appearance on LawnStarter’s list. Springfield ranked #41.
