Downtown Detroit Buildings ‘Light Up’ to Celebrate Miguel Cabrera
During the 2023 season, the Detroit Tigers have honored the 21-year MLB veteran Miguel Cabrera’s career. As Cabrera’s retirement in October approaches, the Tigers have launched a unique initiative to unite Detroit and pay tribute to the future Hall-of-Famer. Several buildings in the city are now lit up in orange and blue, with some displaying Cabrera’s No. 24, every night from September to October 2, following his final MLB game.
Celebrating the career of Miguel Cabrera
The District Detroit, including the Fox Theatre, Little Caesars Arena, and the Little Caesars Global Resource Center, have joined in this effort. Throughout the city, various buildings and organizations are eager to recognize one of MLB’s greatest hitters, such as MotorCity Casino Hotel, Ford Field, Ally Detroit Center, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, David Stott, David Whitney Building, DTE Energy Headquarters, Federal Reserve Building, Greektown Casino, One Campus Martius, Penobscot Building, The Z Deck, The Press/321 Lafayette, Tin Roof, and others.

In addition to the “Light Up” celebration for Cabrera, the Detroit Tigers are partnering with one of Cabrera’s favorite local restaurants, El Rey de las Arepas, for a pop-up event in The District Detroit. This special event will be available on select days in September, just before the Tigers’ regular-season finale.
According to a press release, visitors will find Cabrera-themed decor and career highlights. Festive music will play, and outdoor seating is available. For $15, guests can purchase a sampler ticket at Comerica Park, redeemable for a “Miggy Sampler,” including a mini arepa, a mini cachapa, three fried plantains, and an 8-ounce glass of “passion fruit” juice. Cash and credit card payments are accepted.
Furthermore, a portion of each purchase will be donated to the Miguel Cabrera Foundation. Food from El Rey las Arepas will be available at Comerica Park near section 116 during the “Miggy Celebration Weekend” from September 29th to October 1st.
